Web usability

usabilityWeb usability refers to measuring the quality of a visitor´s experience on any particular Web site.

Usability addresses questions about how easily the visitor can find the information they are seeking and how pleasant their experience is on the site.

It is the study of Web aesthetics, navigation, and accessibility of information. Most website visitors indicate “poor visual presentation” as the number one element that drives them away from a website.

“Consequently, more of today’s web users understand that a well designed website makes it possible to achieve more, with less time and effort.” A business better serve its potential customers by delivering simple, fast, websites designed with usability in mind.

Google Analytics it is a free application.

people-7When you first activate your Google Analytics account, just watch it for a few weeks to see how much  traffic your site gets, where it comes from, and what pages visitors spend the  most time on.  After a few weeks, Google Analytics should give you enough information to see which pages on your the web site are the ones that customers  spend the most time on. You will also be able to see where the majority of your visitors come from. Then based on what your’ve learning from Google Analytics, you can improve your  marketing, which in turn will improve your business.

What Analytics Is Not: Google Analytics is not magic. So don’t enable Google Analytics on your site and expect the application  to create miracles. Using Google Analytics as a tool to monitor and build marketing  efforts, you’ll find there are many benefits to knowing the who, what, when, why, and where of web site traffic.

Blogs are made for search engines.

people-3 With fresh, constantly updated content and a friendly design, blogs hold weight within the engines and have the potential to appear predominantly in results pages. Incorporating customer testimonials, a company profile, and product reviews are just a few ways to manage a company identity and solidify a position as a market leader and product authority.

Can you (the small business owner) manage your own website?

people-4I’m sure all businesses who build static websites promises themselves that they will go back to their web developer and update it regularly. The worst “reason” to not have content management is I can’t afford it. If you have a limited budget its even more important to ensure you have a content solution, because you won’t want to be going back to your web developer at $50 – $100 per hour for updates.

Evaluation of Web Sites

It is important when researching on the Internet to be aware that not all the information you find may be as useful as you might think at first. By making a few simple checks you can ensure that the information you are using is reliable.
A useful web site should meet the following criteria:
Objectivity is the website aiming to influence you in some way  is there a statement of the aims of the organisation clearly available on the page
Accuracy is the site free from errors can you verify the information using other sources such as encyclopedias or other websites if statistics are quoted are the sources cited so that they can be checked
Authority is it obvious who is responsible for the site. Are they qualified in the particular field. Check for contact details so you can verify the information Have a look at the URL or web address A site with .com (commercial) in the address may be trying to sell you something. Research information is more likely to be reliable if it comes from an .edu(educational) or .gov (government) site. Other sites may have .asn (association), .org (organisation), .net (network) as part of their address.
Timeliness when was the site last updated The date of the last revision is usually placed at the bottom of the home page. If it is not there, look for other clues – check the dates of any events listed or documents included  Are links from the page still valid
